Tom Hsieh, an inspiration

How many Gen Xers do you know would choose to deny himself of a big house, nice car, vacations, choose to live on $38,000 and give away the rest of his $200k+ a year salary, choose to live in a lower economic neighborhood to share God’s love?
In our culture of excesses and accumulation of toys, Tom Hsieh lives counter-culturally.
I have to admit, I would like my children to have an established comfortable life, living the American dream with a house with a cozy fireplace, 2.5 kids, and a vacation a couple of times a year.
On the other hand, I realize that chasing after material gain will, in the end, be empty. “What if you gain the whole world and lose your soul?” Jesus says.
If I want the best for the children, the priority should not be to teach them to pursue material gains. I would be doing them a disservice if I did.
If my children will pursue the eternal things of God’s kingdom, than I think I’ve given them something truly valuable.
Tom Hsieh is our role model.
