Two things I pray for my children
October 4th, 2010
How do you pray for your children?
“I pray my son will take a nice long nap today!”
“Please God, help my daughter to do well on her test tomorrow.”
“God, please help my kids to get over the stomach flu real fast!”
I often pray those types of here-and-now type of prayers for my kids. But there are also two long-range type of prayers that I ask God to accomplish in their lives.
Humility
If my children become “successful” with a good job, a nice house, and even a loving spouse, can I breathe a sigh of relieve and be satisfied that I’ve done well as a parent?
Success in the world does not necessarily equal success in God’s economy. Success in the world may lead to pride. Success in the world has tempted people away from God.
God says he opposes the proud and gives grace to the humble.
“God, please give my children a humble heart, tender heart. I pray that they will keep the right perspective- of Your greatness, and of their own fragility, no matter how successful they are in the world.”
Live for the Kingdom
Get a good education, get a good job, make lots of money, buy a big house, travel around the world, retire early. Is that what life is about?
The wisdom of Solomon says its all vanity.
I want my children to have a bigger vision, to live for a bigger purpose.
“God, show my children that there is more to life than meets the eye. Give them a passion to do Your work in this world. Put their skills and their education to work for Your Kingdom’s work.”
